Police officer

Police officers are faced with a variety of situations. From dealing with domestic disputes to handling a murder investigation. A police officer needs to be on their toes at all times. If not, they are susceptible to harm. The police force is not for everyone. A person considering the field, needs to love what they do.

A police officer has several duties. They apprehend criminals and prevent and detect crime. They use investigation techniques for cases centered around rape, murder, drug trafficking etc.. Officers can be faced with these situations, while cruising around a neighborhood. Officers also assist other police officers, by backing them up at a crime scene. People in the force are a very tight group, each treats the other like a brother.

They are sworn to an oath. There is rules and guidelines on how a officer should behave. It is important that they follow these procedures when detaining individuals and approaching crime scenes.

If a police officer follows guidelines and is good at their career, they can move to special duties. Officers can be assigned to a job in counter-terrorism, surveillance, child protection and VIP protection. After a couple of years on the force, opportunities with arise for a police officer.

Functions of a Police Officer

• Patrols a certain part of a city by foot, bicycle or motor vehicle. Their job is to prevent crime, preserve law/order and enforce traffic regulations.
• Respond to calls and complaints involving robbery, fire, accidents and misdemeanors/felonies.
• Administrate first aid, investigate, gather evidence, obtain witness, and make an arrest at the crime scene.
• Interview persons and make proper decisions or direct them to a different authority.
• Check parking meters
• Conduct accident investigations, by securing the area and making sure everyone is okay.
• Escorting prisoners from their jail cell to court.
• Participate in police academy training
• Investigate crimes, look for evidence, question witnesses and maintain surveillance when assigned.
• Interrogate and investigate prisoners

How to Become a Cop

Required to graduate from high school or have a degree that is equivalent. Students can not be younger then 21 years old. Must meet physical and medical tests and pass the oral/written exam provided by the board. College is not required but, is recommended.
